Heat Treatment

The term ‘heat treatment’ is defined as the applied heating or cooling route to materials that can modify their mechanical performance. For instance, the material can be made harder by heating and then suddenly cool in water or oil. However, this material might suffer from brittleness which might be reduced by further heat treatments and possibly slow cooling (furnace or air cooling). Heat treatment is very important in materials as the material can change its properties depending on the heating and/or cooling rates applied. This is essential when it comes to modifying the properties of materials without affecting their chemical composition. The heat treatment can either done in air or vacuum depending on the requirements of the customer.
