Small Punch

 

Small punch testing utilises small discs that are extracted from the parent material (roughly 0.6mm thickness and 8mm diameter) that can be tested under ‘punch’ creep conditions. This provides information of the capability of the material to resist punch conditions in particular for sheet or strip materials. Due to the fact that this type of testing utilises a small amount of material, it can therefore evaluate the performance of expensive materials where the availability of the material can be restricted.  Moreover, this allows testing the material while in service by extracting a small amount of material from actual components. This test can be carried out at room or elevated temperatures.
